When America Touched Me Like That (in a patriotic way)

September 2001 – Park Plaza Hotel Boston

In Gallup
just ten years old then
July Fourth
stopped for gas
we happened on the parade
saw Indians dance

At twenty
pregnant in DC
Capitol
dome with flag
flying unfurled at sunset
made me cry

With my son
standing on “rude bridge”
looked toward
Concord where
they fired the shot heard, there and
’round the world

The mist cleared
my husband and I
holding hands
in the park
first saw the Golden Gate Bridge
felt the history!

A billboard
in Alabama
three days since
the attack
on twin towers in New York
“United We Stand”

  1. Hope you have a great fourth weekend – and a safe holiday. No fireworks here in Texas as we’re in drought conditions with fires blazing all over. The picture here is of the Park Plaza hotel right after 9.11.01 – we had planned a road trip up the Eastern Seaboard to New York, Boston, for the New England colors, Quebec and Nova Scotia. It was pretty much paid for and against the wishes of family we went. Wouldn’t take anything for the experience. What a time to experience America! I fell in love with her then the most and her citizens. Didn’t much love what came after…though.

  2. Amazing history, historic moments…we live in an a country filled with them, and we seem to shine the brightest during some of our toughest times. This is really lovely piece with both historic and personal moments…thank you for sharing, & happy 4th!
